Yes. You can dial 911 for assistance from all 23 provinces in Argentina. Dialing 911 will put you in touch with the police call center who then forwards your call to the nearest ambulance provider. In Buenos Aires, Córdoba, Tierra del Fuego and Jujuy, you can also dial 107 to reach the government ambulance service (“SAME”) directly.

  • Dial 100 for Firefighters – Argentine firefighters are trained to put out fires in homes, housing complexes, residential, commercial premises and industrial plants.
  • Dial 103 for Civil Defense – Argentine Civil Defense helps earthquake victims, tsunamis, floods, landslides, chemical spills and other disasters by providing them with medicine, clothing, shelters and medical assistance.

Yes. In Buenos Aires, SAME develops training courses for doctor, drivers, radio operators and administrative staff: “The University of Buenos Aires School of Medicine, the Institute for Human Development and Health, and SAME’s own training are some of the places where we train staff. .. .SAME also has a Department of Logistics and Continuing Education in charge of providing ongoing training in different areas.”

Outside of Buenos Aires, training programs may be offered by the Red Cross, Civil Defense and Fire Department.

According to the government website, the following public ambulances are available in Buenos Aires

According to SAME’s current director once you have been attended to by ambulance staff you will be transferred to the nearest hospital with available space.

Emergency care provided by ambulance and in hospital is provided free of charge to both Argentinian citizens and foreign travelers and tourists.

Common Emergencies in Argentina

Road Traffic Injuries

  • The Director of SAME Buenos Aires reports 420 road traffic collisions per day in the capital city
  • The Argentina Fire Department reports responding to approximately 50 road traffic collisions nationwide each day through the first six months of 2017
    • (How these numbers can be so different are possibly due to under-reporting by the public in rural areas and/or back-of-the-envelope estimations by SAME’s Director)

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), different groups of travelers will require different vaccinations for travel in Argentina:
