Affiliation

5 Questions for a Paramedic from Puerto Plata

Ana Mercedes Castillo may seem at first glance like any other young adult, but she’s not — in 2017 she was the most active first responder with the volunteer emergency response group, Rescate Ambar, based in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic. To celebrate this achievement we sat down with her to learn more about her.

What was your motivation in becoming a paramedic?

The desire to help people, to saves lives, and the love for others that was always instilled in me by my family.

What does it mean to you to be a paramedic?

A lot. Serving is my passion. I’m that if I wasn’t doing this right now I’d be somewhere else serving in another way — service is what keeps me going.

What are your biggest challenges as a paramedic?

Ohhhh, I’d say there are many, but some of the most important are always being prepared to act, to maintain my training each day and above all to be able to grow in the field. In the Dominican Republic, there’s still a lot of room for improvement and I’d like to be a part of these changes, motivating others to become paramedics.

Are you ever afraid when responding to an emergency?

Yes, my whole family lives in this city so I’ve been afraid of coming on scene and finding that the victim is one of my own. How would I react? What if I can’t help save their life? The most important things is that over time you learn to live with those fear that will always be there, but shouldn’t keep you from helping and giving your best in every call.

What you say to other young adults that want to be a paramedic like you?

Every day I hope more young adults get involved in this service — both our county and the world need. And I’d say the same to older adults as well — it’s never too late to learn and be of service. I’d encourage them to get involved in their community’s services, and if there aren’t any, they can be the foundation for a future service — don’t wait around for someone else to do it: You can do it yourself, and you should.
