Ronand Núñez Susana luce a simple vista como un joven mas, pero no lo es, durante 2017 fue la primer respondiente mas activa de los bomberos de Manzanillo-Pepillo Salcedo en la provincia de Monte Cristi, República Dominicana. Celebramos su entrega y queremos que conozca mas de él a través de estas 5 preguntas.
¿Qué te motivó a ser bombero?
Desde pequeño me llamaba mucho la atención el buen trabajo que realizan los Bomberos, me gustaba ver como ellos actuaban durante un incendio y como rescataban a las personas. un día escuche que querían crear un equipo de primero auxilio básicos los cual estaba avalado por el Cuerpo de Bomberos de Manzanillo, esto me llamo mucho la atención porque sabía que mi comunidad necesitaba un proyecto como este y además de que me gustaba la idea, me anime a ser parte de este grupo. En el transcurso de los días me fue gustando más de lo que realmente pensaba y decidí ser parte del Cuerpo de Bomberos para apoyar con más de mi tiempo y compromiso.
¿Cuales son tus mayores retos como bomberos?
Unos de mis mayores retos es llegar a tiempo al lugar del incidente, poder ayudar a las personas y detener el fuego para que no siga ocasionando daños. Como líder que soy para mí también es un reto motiva y enseñarles de mis conocimientos a mis compañeros y a otras personas que estén interesados en ser parte de nuestro equipo
¿Alguna vez has tenido temor cuando vas a un llamado?
Sí, siempre que voy a un llamado al principio me atemorizo un poco pero luego se me calma, cuando no tengo idea de lo que voy a enfrentarme me preocupa más pero Gracias al Coronel. Ramón Soriano lo cual me ha sido mi mentor, he aprendido a controlar mis miedos, cada vez que me atemorizo intento no reflejarlo para poder calmar la situación y dar lo mejor de mi.
¿En qué piensas generalmente cuando vas camino a un incidente?
Durante el transcurso a una emergencia siempre y cuando se a lo que voy a enfrentarme voy formulando algunas ideas de lo que tengo que hacer a la llegada tales como cuales herramientas vamos a utilizar, que voy a necesitar, como vamos actuar, etc, esto me hace sentir mucho confiado en obtener los mejores resultados con cada acción.
¿Le recomendarías a otros hacer lo mismo que tú, ser bomberos?
Si, es la mejor recomendación que se le puedo dar a un joven, ya que nuestra sociedad necesita personas serviciales con deseo de ayudar a los demás, el ser Bombero te ayuda a obtener conocimientos que salvan vidas, y puedes ser un héroe y una persona que impacte la sociedad.
5 Questions for a Firefighter from Manzanillo
Ronand Núñez Susana may seem at first glance like any other young adult, but he’s not — in 2017 he was the most active first responder with the volunteer firefighters in Manzanillo-Pepillo Salcedo, based in Monte Cristi province, Dominican Republic. To celebrate this achievement we sat down with him to learn more about his role as a volunteer firefighter.
What was your motivation in becoming a firefighter?
Since I was a kid I was also intrigued by the work done by the fire department — I liked watching how they performed during fires and how they rescued people. Then one day I heard that they wanted to form a team of first responders through the Manzanillo fire department and that really got my attention because I knew my community needed something like this so it motivated me to become part of the group. As time went on working as a first responder, I realized that I was enjoying more than I expected so I decided to volunteer as a firefighter and support their work with more of my time and commitment.
What are your biggest challenges as a firefighter?
One of the biggest challenges is arriving in time to the scene of an incident, being able to help victims and stop the fire before it causes more damage. Now as one of the leaders it’s also a challenge to motivate and teach my crew and other people who are interested in joining our department.
Are you ever afraid when responding to an emergency?
Yes, every time I respond to a call there’s a little fear at the beginning, but then you calm yourself. When I have no idea of what’s waiting for me, I can get more concerned, but thanks to Col. Ramón Soriano, who’s been my mentor, I’ve learned to control my fears; every time I get nervous I try not to think about it so that I can be able to calm the situation and give the best I have in me.
What are you thinking about, generally speaking, when you’re en route to an incident?
During emergencies, when I have a good idea of what we’re responding to, I’m formulating in my mind what I’ll have to do upon arrival, like which equipment we’ll have to use, what else I might need, how we’ll handle the situation, etc. This makes me feel a lot more confident in obtaining the best results from each action.
Would you recommend others to be a firefighter?
Yes, it’s the best recommendation I could make to a young adult, especially because our country needs people with a desire to serve and help others. Being a firefighters helps you to gain knowledge, to save lives, and you can be a hero and a person with impact in your community.
